“Slavery, It Happened Here, Too – Stories from New Jersey” Part II

NJCH is proud to sponsor the Sankofa Collaborative’s October 11 workshop “Slavery, It Happened Here, Too – Stories from New Jersey Part II.” The workshop will continue the discussion of the history of slavery in New Jersey from Part I of the event series, with presentations on research sources and methods. The workshop will kick off with a theatrical presentation by Luna Stage.

The program will continue with panels on three topics:

  • Finding Connections with Africa, including Shazel Muhammad, founder and director of African Link Initiative; Jocelyn Francis-White, Trenton community activist; and Guy Weston, Timbuctoo, NJ historian
  • Tracing Individual and Family Histories, including Catherine Medich, New Jersey State Archives; Sharece Blakney, historical research consultant; and Paul Schopp, Assistant Director, South Jersey Culture & History Center, Stockton University
  • Researching Community Histories, including Dr. Christopher Matthews, Montclair State University Anthropology Department; Peggy Norris, historic preservationist; and Dolly Marshall, Mount Peace Association
