What are the main challenges facing democracy today?
Lack of trust and connection. We’re all holed up in our own social media feeds, cable channels, giant cars, fenced-off lawns, without the gathering spaces of the past – main streets, local newspapers, commuter trains, churches, rec centers – our cherished differences become inflammations. We turn inward, harden our own beliefs, consider gossip and conspiracy. We make bunkers that feel secure but don’t lend themselves to the messiness of democracy.
