Update: Application Deadline and Class Dates Revised for Free Clemente Veterans’ Initiative Class

December 16, 2022

The application deadline for the course has been extended to April 20, 2023. The class is now scheduled to run online February 27 through June 12, 2023.

Collaboration will offer humanities coursework, peer community, and cultural opportunities to veterans in northern NJ

The New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Clemente Course in the Humanities to bring free college-level humanities courses to veterans and military-connected families in and around Newark.

Founded in 1995, the Clemente Course offers transformative educational experiences for adults facing economic hardship and adverse circumstances, allowing them to receive college credit for academic work pursued in a supportive, community-building environment. Clemente’s free humanities coursework has reached over 10,000 students around the world to date.

The Clemente Veterans’ Initiative Newark, now in its third year, focuses especially upon serving veterans who are challenged by the transition from soldier to civilian, and who are looking for an engaged community of peers to explore themes of war and reconciliation through great moments of history, art, philosophy, and literature. The NJCH-CVIN collaboration will provide funding for the course itself, as well as cultural enrichment and community-building opportunities for enrolled students.

“NJCH is grateful for the service of New Jersey’s veterans and we are very glad to be able to support a course that will allow the veterans who participate to expand our understandings of classic humanistic works,” said NJCH Executive Director Carin Berkowitz, Ph.D.

“The Cornwall Center at Rutgers-Newark is delighted to host our third CVI course,” said CVIN Academic Director Charity Anderson, Ph.D. “It builds on the Center’s commitment to be a generative resource for the community, and it allows us to collaborate with veterans and military-connected civilians, populations that are often overlooked and underserved.”

Clemente Veterans’ Initiative Newark is now accepting applications for the 2023 class. Veterans as well as family members and friends of veterans are welcome to apply.

Apply by February 20 at: https://www.clementenewark.com/apply. For more information about the course, please visit https://www.clementenewark.com or contact Academic Director Dr. Charity Anderson at cvi@clementenewark.com.
