Award: Action / $15,000
Purpose: To support a project to collect, film, and transcribe the oral histories of the descendants of the Jewish farming communities of southern New Jersey.
The Alliance Colony, located in Pittsgrove Township, New Jersey, was a 19th-century agricultural community formed by Jewish families fleeing oppression and violence in the Russian Empire. The Alliance Heritage Center plans a one-year project to collect, film, and transcribe the oral histories of the descendants of the Jewish farming communities of southern New Jersey.
This research addresses the history of Jewish agricultural settlements in the area as part of a broad consideration of immigration. The historical, social, cultural, and economic significance of these communities is an understudied piece of New Jersey history.
