Award Information
Award: Action / $15,000
Purpose: To support the creation of an illustrated map highlighting the history and notable contributions of Asian Americans in New Jersey.
Social studies learning in New Jersey focuses on local and state history in the elementary grades, and yet few if any resources reflecting New Jersey’s rich Asian American history are available to teachers and families.
Working with artist Kelly Lan and a research team including scholars of Asian American history and subject matter experts from Teach Asian American Stories, the project will develop the first illustrated map showing Asian American history and contributions in New Jersey, highlighting notable individuals, places, monuments, and historical sites, from Seabrook Farms to journalist and civil rights activist Helen Zia to the Bengali Muslim merchants who settled in New Jersey in the 1880s.
