It gets your voice out there. It makes you be heard. Voting allows us to vote in whatever is best for the people. However, our voices are being less heard, as the people who try to help us get shut out more often.
A good citizen means to contribute to the place you live in. Whether it’s helping a local community by giving support and a voice in what happens where you live, community work like food pantries, helping a neighbor voting on subjects relevant to the place you live. Being a good citizen on a personal level is also being aware of the influences around you and how that skews your perceptions and choices. A good citizen is aware of the whole story.
What are the main challenges facing democracy today?
Technology has allowed for “group think”/”echo chamber” environments to flourish and further confirm ones bias. It’s no coincidence that there is a “for you” page or “recommended” page on Youtube. We live to hear things that go along with what we already believe. Technology has only heightened this problem, with people on both sides living in completely different worlds. Now obviously we can’t get rid of tech, but the least we can do is educate people on those different cognitive biases which are exemplified by the digital world and restore the power of the individual which is what made democracy so great.
Voting is important for multiple reasons. Many people risked their lives and have died for you to vote. You can have a say in the government by voting.
