SUMMARY:James Forten of Philadelphia: Black Patriot & Privateer of the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to sponsor this living history event presented by the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association\, Proud Partner of Revolution NJ\, and the Heritage Trail Association. \nJames Forten of Philadelphia\, a child at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War\, served the American Revolution as a teenage privateer and Patriot. Following the American Revolution\, this “Gentleman of Color” took up sailmaking\, establishing himself as a leading businessman in the early American republic’s principal port. A free Black American\, James Forten fought for the abolition of slavery and rights of African Americans in the United States he helped to forge. \nKeith Henley of American Historical Theatre portrays James Forten. \nThe life of James Forten offers a Black perspective on the waterfront and maritime world of ships and sails of which Scottish emigrant and Philadelphia merchant John Wallace was a part before the construction of the Wallace House 250 years ago. \nThe Heritage Trail Association hosts this program at the historic Van Horne House. \n250 years after Scottish emigrant and Philadelphia merchant John Wallace built the Wallace House at Hope Farm\, the Wallace House is under construction again as part of Down the Brook: The Revitalization of Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites for Revolution NJ. The historic rehabilitation of Wallace House is being supported in part by a Semiquincentennial Grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service\, U.S. Department of the Interior. \nRevolution NJ is New Jersey’s official observance of the 250th anniversaries of New Jersey’s first Constitution July 2\, 2026 and the American Revolution in New Jersey from 2024 – 2033.

DESCRIPTION:The Montclair History Center will host a performance by the Moving Architects as part of a project funded by an NJCH grant. \nThe Moving Architects’ performance project brings the rich history of Montclair’s Crane House & Historic YWCA to life through dance. In partnership with Montclair History Center\, this site-immersive performance weaves dance and music together with the spaces and historical narratives of the building. Audiences are guided through the house and grounds to witness intimate and captivating dance performances by the intergenerational and all-female cast. By engaging deeply with the site’s history and incorporating the diverse voices and stories of those who lived there\, the performance transforms the site into a living celebration of its storied past\, offering audiences a profound and intimate connection to the area’s rich history. SUMMARY:"Growing Up True" Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) will hold a family-friendly celebration of the launch of its first children’s book\, Growing Up True\, on Saturday\, September 20\, from 11am to 1pm. Funded in part by an NJCH grant\, Growing Up True is inspired by the legacy of the True family\, African American landowners\, and farmers in the Sourland Mountain region. SSAAM’s book launch party will bring the story to life with hands-on activities\, creative exploration\, and a chance to meet the team behind the book. \nAt the event\, attendees can hear the book read by various storytellers; do some hands-on arts activities; meet the author\, illustrator\, graphic designer\, and Payne herself; and enjoy cobbler\, made from scratch. This event is designed for children ages 4 and up\, but all are welcome. \nThe ticket price of $30 per family includes cobbler and one copy of the book. Tickets can be reserved through Eventbrite. \nThe book was made possible by grants from NJCH and the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission\, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:NJCH grantee Vietnamese Boat People (VBP) is honored to present Our Journeys: 50 Years After the Fall\, a traveling exhibition debuting in New York City in September 2025 at Think!Chinatown’s Studio. \nOur Journeys is a curated multimedia experience\, inspired by the interviews and content generated by the Vietnamese Boat People podcast and programs. It is developed around the core concept that a story passed down is a gift—something given to another with intention and without obligation. For a community whose stories have often been told by others\, this exhibit centers the voices of the Vietnamese diaspora\, reclaiming the narrative through personal stories\, photographs\, multimedia displays\, and video essays. SUMMARY:Food for Thought: International Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to support Piscataway Public Library’s “Food for Thought\,” a series of events exploring the cultural and historical significance of food in our lives\, through an Action Grant. \n— \nJoin us as Chef Sank of Eat Krave Love demonstrates internationally inspired dishes while bringing cultures together through her cooking. Chef Sank\, a cancer survivor\, will cook two dishes using natural\, healthy ingredients. Samples of fusion dishes will be provided. \nRegistration for this event is required via the library website. \nAbout Chef Sank\nWhen I was young I was told it is a woman’s place to be in the kitchen. Ironically\, at the time\, the majority of the top chefs in the world were all men. Though\, I had always wanted to pursue my passion of cooking\, I was told that was not a real career for a woman\, just a job we did. It took me 16 years in the medical field\, to realize how many lives I could change by cooking. I now make it my mission to help people understand and care about what they put in their bodies\, while bringing cultures and cuisines together in the process. Although women have come a long way in terms of rights\, we have a long way to go. I feel the best way of getting us the equality we deserve in the world and especially the workplace is by lifting each other up and supporting one another to follow our passions. We will make greater strides in making a difference in the world with the love and encouragement from other female entrepreneurs. DESCRIPTION:The New Jersey Council for the Humanities is proud to support the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage’s presentation of “Emily Roebling ‘Bridge Builder in Petticoats’ for Children & Families” on June 17\, 2025. \nEvent Description\nEmily Roebling of New Jersey\, who led the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge\, was an early preservationist of the Wallace House. Did you know that tomatoes were considered poisonous at one time\, and it was a New Jersey resident who decided to prove everyone wrong? Learn about heirloom varieties\, modern hybrids and the folklore attached to this fruit. \nAbout the speaker: \nJudith Krall–Russo has enjoyed a lifelong love of foods\, especially embracing the rich agriculture of her home state – New Jersey. Also a tea expert and historian\, she has earned certifications as a Tea Specialist by The Tea School in Pomfret\, Connecticut and The Specialty Tea Institute of New York.  \nTickets are required for this event\, and open now. DESCRIPTION:NJCH grantee the Mahwah Museum will host “A Novel in 500 Words: Explore the Challenging and Wonderful World of Writing for Children with Jenna Beatrice.” Beatrice will discuss her road to becoming an author of children’s books\, the nature of writing for children\, and how to get books published in today’s environment. \nThe event will be held Thursday\, May 29\, 2025\, 7:30-9:00 pm at the museum. \nAbout the speaker:\nJenna Beatrice is a children’s author\, lawyer\, and mother. Jenna\, a graduate of Mahwah High School\, earned a degree in literature and creative writing from Barnard College\, Columbia University\, and received her law degree from Fordham University School of Law. \nJenna’s debut picture book The Loud Librarian (Atheneum/Simon & Schuster)\, was voted by students across the United States for the Children’s Book Council’s 2024 Favorites Award; named to Mrs. Laura Bush’s 2023 Summer Reading List; selected for the 2024 Redbud Read-Aloud Book Award Masterlist; and featured in The Washington Post. Jenna’s latest picture book\, Annabelle and the Spaghetti-Confetti Surprise (Two Lions)\, was released this year.
