DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to sponsor this panel discussion hosted by the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association\, a Proud Partner of Revolution NJ. \nThis panel discussion convenes historians and preservationists to introduce the New Jersey lives of Civil War nurses Clara Barton\, Cornelia Hancock and Somerville’s Arabella Barlow and considering opportunities for historic preservation and heritage tourism to share the stories of the “Jersey Girls” of the Civil War. \nCarolynn Ivanoff and Andrea M. Quinn study and interpret Cornelia Hancock and Arabella Barlow\, nurses of the Civil War descended from families of the American Revolution at Hancock House\, Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites\, enriching the traditional interpretation of the American Revolution to include the long history of New Jersey women’s contributions to the United States. \nBonnie Goldman\, Co-President of the Bordentown Historical Society\, extends the discussion to include Clara Barton’s teaching career in New Jersey and shares progress and plans for Bordentown Historical Society’s restoration of the Clara Barton Schoolhouse. \nFollowing the panel discussion at United Reformed Church join a brief visit to the grave of Arabella Barlow at Somerville’s Old Cemetery on North Bridge Street remembering Arabella’s memorial day\, the 141st anniversary of her death in the Civil War at a Union war hospital in Washington\, July 27\, 1864.

SUMMARY:Food for Thought: International Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to support Piscataway Public Library’s “Food for Thought\,” a series of events exploring the cultural and historical significance of food in our lives\, through an Action Grant. \n— \nJoin us as Chef Sank of Eat Krave Love demonstrates internationally inspired dishes while bringing cultures together through her cooking. Chef Sank\, a cancer survivor\, will cook two dishes using natural\, healthy ingredients. Samples of fusion dishes will be provided. \nRegistration for this event is required via the library website. \nAbout Chef Sank\nWhen I was young I was told it is a woman’s place to be in the kitchen. Ironically\, at the time\, the majority of the top chefs in the world were all men. Though\, I had always wanted to pursue my passion of cooking\, I was told that was not a real career for a woman\, just a job we did. It took me 16 years in the medical field\, to realize how many lives I could change by cooking. I now make it my mission to help people understand and care about what they put in their bodies\, while bringing cultures and cuisines together in the process. Although women have come a long way in terms of rights\, we have a long way to go. I feel the best way of getting us the equality we deserve in the world and especially the workplace is by lifting each other up and supporting one another to follow our passions. We will make greater strides in making a difference in the world with the love and encouragement from other female entrepreneurs. DESCRIPTION:NJCH grantee Vietnamese Boat People (VBP) is honored to present Our Journeys: 50 Years After the Fall\, a traveling exhibition debuting in New York City in September 2025 at Think!Chinatown’s Studio. \nOur Journeys is a curated multimedia experience\, inspired by the interviews and content generated by the Vietnamese Boat People podcast and programs. It is developed around the core concept that a story passed down is a gift—something given to another with intention and without obligation. For a community whose stories have often been told by others\, this exhibit centers the voices of the Vietnamese diaspora\, reclaiming the narrative through personal stories\, photographs\, multimedia displays\, and video essays. SUMMARY:"Growing Up True" Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) will hold a family-friendly celebration of the launch of its first children’s book\, Growing Up True\, on Saturday\, September 20\, from 11am to 1pm. Funded in part by an NJCH grant\, Growing Up True is inspired by the legacy of the True family\, African American landowners\, and farmers in the Sourland Mountain region. SSAAM’s book launch party will bring the story to life with hands-on activities\, creative exploration\, and a chance to meet the team behind the book. \nAt the event\, attendees can hear the book read by various storytellers; do some hands-on arts activities; meet the author\, illustrator\, graphic designer\, and Payne herself; and enjoy cobbler\, made from scratch. This event is designed for children ages 4 and up\, but all are welcome. \nThe ticket price of $30 per family includes cobbler and one copy of the book. Tickets can be reserved through Eventbrite. \nThe book was made possible by grants from NJCH and the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission\, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to sponsor this living history event presented by the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association\, Proud Partner of Revolution NJ\, and the Heritage Trail Association. \nJames Forten of Philadelphia\, a child at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War\, served the American Revolution as a teenage privateer and Patriot. Following the American Revolution\, this “Gentleman of Color” took up sailmaking\, establishing himself as a leading businessman in the early American republic’s principal port. A free Black American\, James Forten fought for the abolition of slavery and rights of African Americans in the United States he helped to forge. \nKeith Henley of American Historical Theatre portrays James Forten. \nThe life of James Forten offers a Black perspective on the waterfront and maritime world of ships and sails of which Scottish emigrant and Philadelphia merchant John Wallace was a part before the construction of the Wallace House 250 years ago. \nThe Heritage Trail Association hosts this program at the historic Van Horne House. \n250 years after Scottish emigrant and Philadelphia merchant John Wallace built the Wallace House at Hope Farm\, the Wallace House is under construction again as part of Down the Brook: The Revitalization of Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites for Revolution NJ. The historic rehabilitation of Wallace House is being supported in part by a Semiquincentennial Grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service\, U.S. Department of the Interior. \nRevolution NJ is New Jersey’s official observance of the 250th anniversaries of New Jersey’s first Constitution July 2\, 2026 and the American Revolution in New Jersey from 2024 – 2033.

SUMMARY:Cemetery Stewardship Program Series: Field Visit on New Jersey’s Folk Grave Markers
DESCRIPTION:Building on the insights shared in an earlier virtual workshop\, NJCH grantee Preservation NJ will host an in-person workshop at St. James Cemetery to give participants the opportunity to explore New Jersey’s folk grave marker tradition firsthand.  \nLed by historians Gordon Bond and Stephanie M. Hoagland\, the guided tour will focus on identifying and interpreting handmade markers found throughout the cemetery\, often located along fence lines\, in low-lying areas\, or tucked behind more traditional monuments. Attendees will examine examples gaining a deeper appreciation for their artistic\, cultural\, and historic value.  \nThis on-site experience will bring the discussion to life\, highlighting the stories of the communities behind these unique and often overlooked memorials.

SUMMARY:Ukrainians in New Jersey: A Historical Overview
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the rich history of Ukrainians in New Jersey in this online presentation by Michael Andrec and Michael Buryk of the Ukrainian History and Education Center\, a multiple-time NJCH grantee. \nSurprisingly\, there has been a remarkable lack of secondary sources devoted specifically to the history of Ukrainian immigrants in New Jersey. The “Ukrainians in New Jersey” project by the Ukrainian History and Education Center’s archivist Michael Andrec and external researcher and writer Michael Buryk is an ongoing effort to help remedy this. It consists of an online resource that will eventually have a historical overview\, histories of communities and individual Ukrainian New Jerseyans\, and a collection of primary and secondary source materials that can be searched\, or browsed by date or geography. \nThis is free online talk\, but registration is required. \nMichael Buryk is a researcher of Ukrainian history and a well-known figure of Ukrainian descent in the United States. He is a writer\, podcaster and public speaker. He specializes in Ukrainian genealogy\, and produces his own original podcast‎‎ about Ukraine\, which is sponsored by The Ukrainian Weekly newspaper and is available on its web site. He is a resident contributor to Vilni Media\, which provides in Ukrainian and English up-to-date information\, news and analysis for local Ukrainian communities in the United States written by Ukrainian Americans. Mike retired in 2016 from a 40-year career in advertising and publishing. He holds a Master’s Degree (1975) in Russian/Soviet area studies from Hunter College\, the City University of New York. \nMichael Andrec has been the archivist at the Ukrainian History and Education Center since 2010\, where he has been responsible for preserving and making accessible hundreds of collections\, as well as exhibition curation\, digitization of audio and paper-based archives\, outreach\, and reference services. In 2022\, Michael and the UHEC received the Innovative Archives Award from the New Jersey Caucus of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference for his rapid shift from archival duties to education and advocacy after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

DESCRIPTION:Join Morven Museum & Garden for an engaging presentation about the early history of Princeton’s African American community with Educator and Princeton Historian Shirley Satterfield. \nMorven’s newest exhibition\, Northern Families\, Southern Ties (opening November 6\, 2025)\, explores the complex connections between North and South\, and the interstate movement of enslaved people from the late eighteenth century through the Civil War. \nHow did these larger connections and movements impact Princeton’s Black community? \nEducator\, Princeton Historian\, and Founder of the Witherspoon-Jackson Historical and Cultural Society\, Shirley Satterfield\, will lead an illustrated talk sharing the stories\, experiences\, and foundational contributions of African Americans in eighteenth and nineteenth century Princeton. \nThis is a free hybrid event. This piece will be auctioned at the end of the night\, and all proceeds from both ticket sales and the auction will support the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center’s education programming.  \nWhether you’re a baseball lover\, a Montclair history buff or simply seeking inspiration and community\, “IT AIN’T OVER” promises a fun night of connection and creativity.\nDoors open at 6:30pm for those interested in exploring the museum before the show.
