SUMMARY:Reenactment: Prince Rodgers Military Family & Black Soldiers of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Join NJCH and the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association for a special program and reception featuring the reenactors of the 6th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops as they salute Prince Rodgers and Black Soldiers of the Civil War in the historic setting of Prince Rodgers Cemetery. \nThe reception includes a special viewing of “Oh\, Freedom! Blacks on the Battlefront and in the Aftermath of the Revolutionary War in New Jersey\,” a traveling exhibit from New Jersey State Parks\, Forests & Historic Sites exploring the service of Black Americans in the American Revolution as background to the contributions of the Prince Rodgers family in the Civil War. \nAdmission is free. Parking and reception will be at Green Knoll Volunteer Fire Company\, 606 N. Bridge Street Bridgewater\, NJ 08807. \nThe Prince Rodgers Foundation\, Inc. hosts this memorial and living history event in cooperation with Somerset Patriots and Somerset County Historical Society. Historical reenactors of the 6th Regiment are presented by the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association with the sponsorship of NJCH\, and Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission.

Up next in the series is “What is Civic Participation?” a presentation by Hyacinth Miller\, Assistant Teaching Professor in the Rutgers University – Newark School of Arts and Sciences Africana Studies and Political Science Departments. \nAbout the Event \nProfessor Miller will lead attendees in an engaging\, interactive discussion about what it means to participate in our civic system\, exploring the ways in which we currently contribute and can work to make change for everyone in our communities. \nThis free event is hybrid – held both in-person in Morven’s Stockton Education Center and virtually via Zoom webinar. Q&A for live and virtual attendees will follow the talk. A webinar link will be shared with virtual ticket holders upon registration. A recording of the event will be shared following the program. \nRegister online \nAbout the Speaker \nHyacinth Miller is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Rutgers University–Newark\, where she teaches in both the Department of Africana Studies and the Department of Political Science. She also lectures in Latino and Caribbean Studies and Political Science at Rutgers–New Brunswick. She teaches courses on Africana Studies\, Caribbean studies and politics\, and comparative politics. Her research interests explore Black immigrant political incorporation\, Caribbean political development\, and race/ethnicity/identity politics. \nHyacinth also directs the Public Service Leadership Program at the Sheila Y. Oliver Center for Politics and Race in America and is a co-founder of the Rutgers University Atlantic Reparatory Justice Research Lab. Her extensive professional background includes roles in government affairs\, criminal justice reform\, and development\, with experience at the JEHT Foundation\, the Association for Paroling Authorities International\, New York City Council and the U.S. House of Representatives. \nAlso a PhD candidate in the Joint PhD Program in Global Urban Studies and Urban Systems at Rutgers\, Hyacinth’s doctoral research focuses on Black women in elected office. Her previous scholarly work includes a refereed journal article on West Indian political representation in New Jersey and various research projects in Colombia\, Panama\, the USVI and South Korea. \nHer commitment to advancing the understanding of Black women in politics [locally and globally] and the political dynamism of the Caribbean and African region and diaspora is evident through her research\, teaching\, and service.

He is the coauthor\, with his wife\, Sheryl WuDunn\, of five previous books: “Tightrope\,” “A Path Appears\,” “Half the Sky\,” “Thunder from the East\,” and “China Wakes.” He was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes\, one with WuDunn in 1990 for their coverage of China\, and the second in 2006 for his columns on Darfur. He lives in Yamhill\, Oregon. \nAbout the Conversation Partner \nStephen Engelberg was the founding managing editor of ProPublica from 2008–2012\, and became editor-in-chief on January 1\, 2013. He came to ProPublica from The Oregonian in Portland\, where he had been a managing editor since 2002. Before joining The Oregonian\, Engelberg worked for The New York Times for 18 years\, including stints in Washington\, D.C.\, and Warsaw\, Poland\, as well as in New York. Next in this series is a discussion with pioneering sports journalist Melissa Ludtke on her book Locker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside. \nThe former journalist with Sports Illustrated\, ABC Sports\, Time\, and Nieman Reports will discuss the book with former Sports Illustrated and USA Today sports journalist Kelly Whiteside\, now professor at Montclair State University. \nThe program is co-presented by NJCH grantee the Yogi Berra Museum. \nLocker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside chronicles Ludtke’s groundbreaking 1978 federal legal case in which the judge ordered baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn to provide equal access for women so they could work alongside their male peers in Major League Baseball locker rooms. With her ruling in Ludtke v. Kuhn\, Judge Constance Baker Motley opened doors that several generations of young women have walked through in filling jobs in sports media that previously were only held by men. Even with her breakthrough case\, many key issues revolving around gender and equity remain in play 46 years later. \nRegistration \nThe event is free but registration is required. DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to sponsor a performance by Nobuntu\, the internationally acclaimed female a cappella quartet from Zimbabwe\, at the Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College. \nAbout Nobuntu \nNobuntu is renown for its inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. The ensemble’s concerts are performed with pure voices\, augmented by minimalistic percussion\, traditional instruments such as the Mbira (thumb piano) and organic\, authentic dance movements. \nNobuntu was nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards in London in 2015 and are currently a two-time winner for the Best Imbube Group at the Bulawayo Arts Awards 2017 and 2019. In the last few seasons\, the quintet has performed at festivals and concert halls in Italy\, Austria\, Germany\, Belgium\, the Czech Republic and throughout the African continent. The ensemble was a huge critical success at “Trans-Vocal” in Frankfurt and “Voice Mania” in Vienna. Their first tour to Canada\, in 2016\, included performances in Toronto\, Winnipeg\, Vancouver\, and Victoria. \nThe word Nobuntu is an African concept that values humbleness\, love\, unity and family from a woman’s perspective. SUMMARY:HalloWheaton and The Multiverse of African Cultural Heritage
DESCRIPTION:NJCH is a proud sponsor of HalloWheaton and The Multiverse of African Cultural Heritage at WheatonArts. \nAbout the Event \nWheatonArts will be presenting an afternoon of diverse family activities throughout the campus on Saturday\, October 26\, 2024 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to Trick-or-Treat in Halloween costumes and meet traditional costumed characters played by the talented Mystic Realms actors. \nThe Down Jersey Folklife Center will also present “The Multiverse of African Cultural Heritage”\, emphasizing the historic connections between cultures celebrating Ancestral Connections\, Halloween\, and/or Day of the Dead. With a primary focus on West African cultures\, “The Multiverse of African Cultural Heritage” depicts our region through narrated presentations of ceremonies\, ritual mask dances\, drumming\, and traditional crafts. \nThe activities will highlight the cultural heritage of the African communities as well as those whose cultures have been influenced by African history\, traditions\, and aesthetics\, including those from the Caribbean islands\, Central and South America. \nAttendees are also welcome to visit the Museum of American Glass for special exhibit tours\, watch live demonstrations in our Artist Studios\, participate in a campus-wide scavenger hunt\, hear live music\, enjoy a bite to eat\, and more. \nHalloWheaton and the Multiverse of African Cultural Heritage are FREE to the public\, part of WheatonArts Family Days! DESCRIPTION:Event Recording\n \n\nInterested in learning how to use public humanities practices to discover\, preserve\, and celebrate your community? Join us for a virtual information session on Wednesday\, November 6\, at noon! \nCommunity History participants receive instruction on public history practices\, develop projects in a collaborative environment\, and are eligible to receive funding from NJCH to launch projects in their communities. \nThis virtual information session will give you all the information you want to know about the program. We will review program and eligibility guidelines\, application process and timeline\, and leave plenty of time for Q&A. \nApplications to the 2025 Community History cohort will be due by December 12\, 2024.
