The “Ten Crucial Days” were the canvas on which a masterpiece of bold and enterprising leadership was painted. It may have borne George Washington’s signature\, but the brushes were furnished by the officers and common soldiers he commanded and the coloration made vibrant by the hues from various contributing factors: the quality of decision-making on both sides of the conflict\, the nature of the terrain\, the effects of weather\, the roar of cannon fire\, and the vagaries of fortune. Please join the NJ State Library in kicking off the NJ250 programming series as historian David Price reexamines this period and provides new context for its fundamental impact on our fight for independence. \nDavid Price has been a historical interpreter for the Friends of Washington Crossing Park since 2014 and leads guided tours focusing on the “Ten Crucial Days” of the American Revolution and other historical aspects of Washington Crossing Historic Park (PA)\, a registered National Historic Landmark. England General Hospital\, a recovery and rehabilitation center for injured soldiers. \nThe community mobilized its resources for Civilian Defense\, calling on local men and women to be air raid wardens and airplane spotters. Women volunteered for the USO and the Red Cross\, joined the military and worked as nurses. African American men and women served in the military\, worked in the defense industry and volunteered on the home front. A multi-year project spearheaded by the Willingboro Community Development Corporation has gathered information\, insights\, and recollections about the house with the help of NJCH funding. \nThe project’s findings and collections are on display at the library through January 31. A lecture by Eric Wolff of Chromium\, LLC will mark the finale of the exhibit. Wolff is an expert in “Space Age” design\, and his New Hope\, PA\, gallery and store specializes in refurbishing and selling furniture\, accessories\, and electronics in this iconic style primarily manufactured between 1965 to 1974. \nThe Willingboro Futuro House is a rare existing example of the Futuro\, a distinctive “UFO-style” manufactured home designed in the 1960s by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. Intended to be small\, efficient\, and easily portable lodgings\, approximately 100 models were manufactured. Of those\, only a small number of intact models remain. The Willingboro Futuro is believed to be the only remaining example in New Jersey and in the greater Philadelphia area. \nSince being moved to the park in 1975\, the house has served different purposes but for a number of years has been in disrepair. The exhibit traces the history of the local building and the Futuro House concept. We’ll also help answer your questions on federal and state funding. \nThis event will be held to be most convenient for individuals in the South Jersey region. The South Jersey meeting will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday\, February 11 at the Lyceum Hall Center for the Arts in Burlington (432 High St\, Burlington\, NJ 08016). \nThe space is ADA accessible with a ramp in the rear entrance and an elevator to the second floor. There is ample street parking\, as well as a parking lot behind the venue. Light refreshments will be provided. \nAdditional gatherings will be held for those who prefer to attend virtually and those in North Jersey.
