SUMMARY:Grant Application Draft Review Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Invited applicants may submit one draft for review by the draft deadline. NJCH staff will typically provide written feedback on your draft proposal\, but it can be incorporated into scheduled meetings. Our goal is to keep the turnaround time as short as possible\, but it will be dependent upon demand\, and we recommend that you submit your draft before the draft deadline. \nWe do not require complete applications for draft review. If you are unable to complete the full application by the draft review deadline\, a completed budget and partial narrative is often more useful than a complete narrative and no budget. \nDraft applications should be sent to grants@njhumanities.org as Word\, Excel\, and/or PDF documents. An easy way to create a PDF of your draft application is to click the “Application Packet” button in the application page of our online grant management system. \nFor full information on grants\, visit https://njhumanities.org/grants/grants-overview.

SUMMARY:So You Think You Know Civics Speaker Series - What is Law?
DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to sponsor the event series “So You Think You Know Civics?” hosted by Morven Museum and Garden and Princeton Public Library. Upcoming in the series is the talk What is Law? by Tao L. Dumas\, Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Prelaw Advisory Committee at The College of New Jersey. \nEvents are free but online registration is required. Register for this event at https://www.morven.org/upcoming/civics2024law. \nAbout the Event \nWe’ve all heard “a government for the people by the people.” But what does this really mean? \nJoin Morven and the Princeton Public Library as we continue\, So You Think You Know Civics? This series of free public programs will unpack big questions about the past and present of the U.S. government\, and how we can make change in our democracy. \nOur speaker for the fourth program in the series\, What is Law? is Tao L. Dumas\, Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Prelaw Advisory Committee at The College of New Jersey. \nExplore the role that law plays in our government. How do we make laws? What is the role of the Supreme Court? How can laws change? \nThis event is hybrid – held both in-person in Morven’s Stockton Education Center and virtually via Zoom webinar. Q&A for live and virtual attendees will follow the talk. A webinar link will be shared with virtual ticket holders upon registration. A recording of the event will be shared following the program. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Tao Dumas is an associate professor of political science at The College of New Jersey. Prior to that she worked at the University at Albany (SUNY) and the Louisiana State University Law Center.  Her research focuses on the U.S. courts and the ways lawyers shape and work within the legal system. She is particularly interested in how institutional differences across states condition winners and losers in the courts and how attorneys’ experience\, expertise\, and demographic characteristics impact their legal practices. She also serves as the Coordinator for the TCNJ Prelaw Program.

SUMMARY:Open Book / Open Mind\, Melissa Ludtke\, "Locker Room Talk"
DESCRIPTION:NJCH is a proud sponsor of Open Book / Open Mind\, a flagship series of literary events organized by Montclair Public Library whereby top authors discuss their new books and current events in front of a live audience. Next in this series is a discussion with pioneering sports journalist Melissa Ludtke on her book Locker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside. \nThe former journalist with Sports Illustrated\, ABC Sports\, Time\, and Nieman Reports will discuss the book with former Sports Illustrated and USA Today sports journalist Kelly Whiteside\, now professor at Montclair State University. \nThe program is co-presented by NJCH grantee the Yogi Berra Museum. \nLocker Room Talk: A Woman’s Struggle to Get Inside chronicles Ludtke’s groundbreaking 1978 federal legal case in which the judge ordered baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn to provide equal access for women so they could work alongside their male peers in Major League Baseball locker rooms. With her ruling in Ludtke v. Kuhn\, Judge Constance Baker Motley opened doors that several generations of young women have walked through in filling jobs in sports media that previously were only held by men. Even with her breakthrough case\, many key issues revolving around gender and equity remain in play 46 years later. \nRegistration \nThe event is free but registration is required. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. After the discussion\, there will be a Q&A period and a book signing and sale with Watchung Booksellers. The program is co-presented by the Yogi Berra Museum. Register at https://montclairlibrary.libnet.info/event/11000254.

SUMMARY:Grunin Center Presents "Nobuntu"
DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to sponsor a performance by Nobuntu\, the internationally acclaimed female a cappella quartet from Zimbabwe\, at the Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College. \nAbout Nobuntu \nNobuntu is renown for its inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. The ensemble’s concerts are performed with pure voices\, augmented by minimalistic percussion\, traditional instruments such as the Mbira (thumb piano) and organic\, authentic dance movements. \nNobuntu was nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards in London in 2015 and are currently a two-time winner for the Best Imbube Group at the Bulawayo Arts Awards 2017 and 2019. In the last few seasons\, the quintet has performed at festivals and concert halls in Italy\, Austria\, Germany\, Belgium\, the Czech Republic and throughout the African continent. The ensemble was a huge critical success at “Trans-Vocal” in Frankfurt and “Voice Mania” in Vienna. Their first tour to Canada\, in 2016\, included performances in Toronto\, Winnipeg\, Vancouver\, and Victoria. \nThe word Nobuntu is an African concept that values humbleness\, love\, unity and family from a woman’s perspective. The ensemble represents a new generation of young African women singers who celebrate and preserve their culture\, beauty\, and heritage through art. The ensemble’s mission is the belief that music can be an important vehicle for change\, one that transcends racial\, tribal\, religious\, gender\, and economic boundaries. \nFor more information and to purchase tickets\, visit https://www.grunincenter.org/event/nobuntu/.
