SUMMARY:The Moving Architects Crane House & Historic YWCA Performance Project
DESCRIPTION:The Montclair History Center will host a performance by the Moving Architects as part of a project funded by an NJCH grant. \nThe Moving Architects’ performance project brings the rich history of Montclair’s Crane House & Historic YWCA to life through dance. In partnership with Montclair History Center\, this site-immersive performance weaves dance and music together with the spaces and historical narratives of the building. Audiences are guided through the house and grounds to witness intimate and captivating dance performances by the intergenerational and all-female cast. By engaging deeply with the site’s history and incorporating the diverse voices and stories of those who lived there\, the performance transforms the site into a living celebration of its storied past\, offering audiences a profound and intimate connection to the area’s rich history. Register for this event at https://www.morven.org/upcoming/civics2024politicalleadership. \nAbout the Event \nWe’ve all heard “a government for the people by the people.” But what does this really mean? \nJoin Morven and the Princeton Public Library for the fifth and final program in the So You Think You Know Civics? series. This series of free public programs unpacks big questions about the past and present of the U.S. government\, and how we can make change in our democracy. \nThis event is hybrid – held both in-person in Morven’s Stockton Education Center and virtually via Zoom webinar. Q&A for live and virtual attendees will follow the talk. A webinar link will be shared with virtual ticket holders upon registration. A recording of the event will be shared following the program. \nSo You Think You Know Civics? is supported by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities\, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nAbout the Speaker \nSaladin Ambar joined the Eagleton Institute of Politics in 2017. Dr. Ambar is a Senior Scholar at Eagleton’s Center on the American Governor and Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. He is the author of six books\, including Stars and Shadows: The Politics of Interracial Friendship from Jefferson to Obama (Oxford University Press 2022)\, which won the PROSE Award for Best Book in Government and Politics from the Association of American Publishers in 2022. Prof. Ambar’s Malcolm X at Oxford Union: Racial Politics in a Global Era (Oxford University Press 2014) is currently in development for a feature length film\, by Number 9 Films (UK).

DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to sponsor the inaugural New Jersey Hispanic Film Festival hosted by the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank\, NJ\, October 4-6 as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. The event will bring together filmmakers\, community members\, and organizations to showcase the richness and diversity of Hispanic experiences through film. \nThe festival will show more than 15 films\, including: I’ll Carry You With Me (Audience Choice Winner at Sundance Film Festival 2020\, Sony Pictures Classics)\, Totem (Academy Award Best Foreign Film 2023)\, No (Sony Pictures Classics)\, Quinceañera (Sony Pictures Classics)\, Your Monsters (Midnight Horror)\, Nosotros Los Pobres (Golden Age Classic)\, Encanto (Walt Disney) and six international shorts\, including two from last year’s Breakthrough Filmmaker Fest – Con Mis Dedos and Subjective Worlds. \n \nProgramming will also showcase family programs\, talk backs and cultural workshops. A panel discussion on Undocu-Filmmaking\, led by the Undocumented Film Collective and industry experts is scheduled\, as well as a panel on Women in Media\, led by Doris Martinez\, Owner/Founder DFez Content Media Management and Latino Circuit TV. SUMMARY:"Systems Thinking: A Model for Civic Collaboration"
DESCRIPTION:How can community-driven journalism produce a more informed and engaged society? Join the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and Journalism + Design at The New School for a virtual session\, as we explore this question through the lens of systems thinking–a useful practice and mindset for understanding complex issues! This event is free and open to the public. \nThe 75-minute session will include a brief introduction to the concept of systems thinking; an overview of why and how it can be used to understand and shift community narratives; and an action-oriented discussion about how such narratives can reveal—and even create—entry points for powerful systemic change in attendees’ own communities. \nThe session will be facilitated by Cole Goins\, engagement lead for Journalism + Design at The New School. \n\n\n \n\nWho should attend?\n\nPublic humanities experts whose work uncovers\, shares\, and preserves untold and underrepresented stories from communities in New Jersey\nIndividuals and orgs that want to learn how to use community voices to spur civic change and renewal\nAnyone interested in the concepts of systems thinking or community-based journalism.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenter\n\nCole Goins develops programs that democratize the tools of journalism and strengthen local information networks. He is also a contributing editor for community engagement to The Oaklandside\, and has led trainings\, engagement initiatives and events with organizations including the American Press Institute\, Poynter\, USA TODAY Network\, and the Investigative Reporting Workshop.  \n\nHe spent a decade in nonprofit investigative journalism\, first as the engagement editor at the Center for Public Integrity\, and most recently as the director of community engagement at Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting.\n \n\n\n\nThis session is part of Democracy and the Informed Citizen\, an initiative which is administered by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and generously funded by the Mellon Foundation. Democracy and the Informed Citizen examines the essential role that journalism and the humanities play in creating an informed citizenry.
