DESCRIPTION:Union College will mark the opening of the “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” exhibit on its Cranford Campus with a historical presentation from faculty members UC faculty members Phillip Papas and Michele Rotunda on October 10. The presentation\, “Monuments Matter: Newark’s Columbus Statue and the Colossus of Staten Island\,” will be held in Room N4 at 11:30 a.m. \nThe college will also hold a launch event to celebrate the exhibit opening on October 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Commons. The exhibit will be open through November 18. \nPapas is a senior professor in the UC Department of Economics\, Government\, and History. He completed his PhD in history at the City University of New York Graduate Center and has written extensively about the history of the American Revolution and Staten Island. \nRotunda is assistant professor in the UC Department of Economics\, Government\, and History. She holds a PhD in history from Rutgers University at New Brunswick and teaches courses in history and government.

DESCRIPTION:Union Public Library is pleased to present the virtual program “What’s the Verdict?” on Tuesday\, October 11\, at 7:00 pm. Ian Drake\, professor of Political Science and Law at Montclair State University\, will lead attendees in considering some of the pending cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. In the 2022 term\, the Court will review cases regarding the power of the government under environmental laws\, the redistricting of congressional seats\, the federal and state governments’ relations with Native American tribes\, free speech\, and\, perhaps most notably\, affirmative action in college admissions. In this talk\, participants will review the most important cases the Court has taken on for the coming year. \nDrake obtained his PhD in American History from the University of Maryland in 2010. His teaching interests include the American judiciary and legal system\, the US Supreme Court and constitutional history\, and the history and contemporary study of law and society. DESCRIPTION:The East Brunswick Public Library is pleased to present the program “A Vote\, A Voice: Women’s Suffrage and the Fight for Representation” on Thursday\, October 20 at 6:30 pm. Scholar Lucia McMahon\, PhD will speak about the long history of women’s activism over the course of the nineteenth century\, to highlight the multi-faceted mosaic of the women’s suffrage movement. \nLucia McMahon\, PhD is currently Professor and Chair of History at William Paterson University in Wayne\, NJ\, where she regularly teaches courses in historical methods\, early national US history\, and women’s history. Her research broadly focuses on women’s intellectual and educational history\, with a particular focus on the recovery of relatively “unknown” women’s voices and experiences. McMahon is the author of several books and articles\, including Mere Equals: The Paradox of Educated Women in the Early American Republic (Cornell University Press\, 2012)\, and The Journal of Rachel Van Dyke\, 1810- 1811 (University of Pennsylvania Press\, 2000).

DESCRIPTION:Many humanities practitioners jumped into the digital space in 2020 in a frantic attempt to stay in touch and engaged with our audiences as we were all thrust into social distancing. Many of us had little experience and only the beginnings of a plan in those early pandemic days\, but we have learned a lot in the past 2+ years. Finding effective ways to measure the impact of our digital projects is critical to determining how we will continue to work in virtual spaces moving forward. \nWhether hosting online events or managing projects that live online\, we benefit from understanding who is accessing our work and how it impacts them. Presenters will discuss effective methods for evaluation\, depending on the type of program\, how to develop questions that gather the information you need\, and both the opportunities and limitations of evaluating digital programs. And can “We the people” mean different things at different times to different people? \nMontville Public Library will explore these complex questions with the help of Dr. Christopher Fisher\, associate professor of history at The College of New Jersey\, during the program “We the People…Wait\, Which People?” on January 12. From sharecropping to immigration\, participants can consider the concept of the changing meaning of citizenship and have an engaging and important dialogue about immigration today and the impact of the policies that affect us all. \nThe program will be held 1:00-3:00 p.m.\, January 12\, 2023\, at the Pio Costa Auditorium at the Montville Township Public Library. \nFisher\, who is also an NJCH board member\, earned his B.A. and Ph.D. in history from Rutgers University\, with a focus on US diplomacy. DESCRIPTION:NJCH is proud to be a sponsor of the Montclair History Center’s The Price of Liberty film and discussion series.\nThis is the eighth year for the series\, which focuses on issues related to race\, segregation\, integration\, and Civil Rights. This year’s 2023 series explores reparations and social justice sought for African American and Asian communities in the films Free Renty (2021) by filmmaker David Grubin and Reparations (2021) by filmmaker Jon Osaki. \nFree Renty tells the story of Tamara Lanier\, an African American woman determined to force Harvard University to cede possession of daguerreotypes of her great-great-great grandfather\, an enslaved man named Renty. The daguerreotypes were commissioned in 1850 by a Harvard professor to “prove” the superiority of the white race. The images remain emblematic of America’s failure to acknowledge the cruelty of slavery\, the racist science that supported it and the white supremacy that continues to infect our society today. The film focuses on Lanier and tracks her lawsuit against Harvard\, and features attorney Benjamin Crump\, author Ta-Nehisi Coates and scholars Ariella Azoulay and Tina Campt. \nThe film will be screened on Wednesday\, February 22 at 7 pm at Montclair Film’s Cinema 505 at 505 Bloomfield Ave\, Montclair. DESCRIPTION:Come out and celebrate the amazing stories from the Center for Cooperative Media’s inaugural “Stories Invincible” reporting fellows! \nStories Invincible is a Camden-based initiative that supports restorative narrative reporting by and for communities of color in South Jersey.
