HUMANITIES TO GO

PUBLIC SCHOLARS PROGRAM FAQ

WHO CAN APPLY?

Only New Jersey 501(c)3 nonprofit or government organizations are eligible to apply to host a subsidized PSP session.

To be eligible to apply, an organization must be a 501(c)3 nonprofit or government organization located in New Jersey. Groups that do not meet our eligibility requirements that wish to apply for a subsidized PSP session may partner with an eligible nonprofit 501(c)3 or government organization, such as a local library or school.

WHY DO I HAVE TO APPLY?

PSP programs are awarded on a first come, first served basis.

NJCH has funding available for 200 programs. After all subsidized programs are awarded, nonprofit organizations can host a PSP program at a rate of $500 per program. Community groups and associations that are not 501(c)3 entities and for-profit companies can host a PSP program at a rate of $500 at any time.

HOW MANY SUBSIDIZED PROGRAMS CAN MY ORGANIZATION HOST?

Eligible organizations may apply for one subsidized programs per NJCH fiscal year (November to October).

WHAT DOES SUBSIDIZED MEAN?

NJCH provides funding for the bulk of the program (90%). The $50 administrative fee (10% of the overall cost) is a partial cost for the host site.

The actual cost to NJCH for each program is approximately $500.

HOW DO I PAY THE $50 ADMINISTRATIVE FEE?

Once NJCH receives finalized program information, host organizations will receive an invoice for the $50 administration fee.

The fee is due 30 days after the program date. Instructions on how to submit payment will be included with the invoice; checks should be made payable to New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

BESIDES THE $50 ADMINISTRATIVE FEE, ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS?

There are no additional costs for the host organization receiving the subsidized programs.

NJCH absorbs the expenses associated with PSP programs, which includes compensating the scholar, paying for scholar travel fees, and program operations.

Host organizations may choose to invest in any paid advertising, refreshments, or other equipment or room rental costs.

CAN I REQUEST A PROGRAM THAT ISN’T LISTED IN THE CATALOGUE?

No. We refresh our offerings every three years.

HOW ARE THE SCHOLARS AND PROGRAMS CHOSEN?

Programs are chosen based on variety, interactivity, and relevance.

Scholars can have a maximum of three programs in the catalog at a time.  NJCH releases an RFP for new program proposals annually in March.

HOW DO I BOOK A SCHOLAR FOR A PARTICULAR DAY?

Booking a program on a specific day depends on a scholars availability.

The earlier your application is submitted, the higher the likelihood that a scholar is available. We cannot guarantee scholar availability on a specific day/time, which is why we require three dates/times in each application.

HOW DO I TELL AUDIENCES ABOUT MY PROGRAM?

Proactive outreach is important to a successful program.

We ask that organizations identify at least three ways to alert audiences to the program. We offer an Outreach Guide to help you promote your offering. Also, NJCH staff is available to discuss outreach efforts.

SHOULD I TELL NJCH ABOUT A CHANGE TO THE DATE/TIME OF MY PROGRAM?

Yes. NJCH maintains an event calendar of PSP programs and other NJCH events and opportunities.

Since we are the primary public humanities convener in the state, we must have current and accurate information on our site, as the programs are free and open to the public.

CAN I SAVE MY APPLICATION AND FINISH IT LATER?

Yes. You can save your work and return to it in multiple sessions.

CAN I BOOK A PROGRAM ONCE ALL THE SUBSIDIZED PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN AWARDED?

Yes. The fee per program is $500.

WHY DID THE HORIZON SPEAKERS BUREAU CHANGE TO THE PUBLIC SCHOLARS PROJECT?

High quality scholar-led public humanities programs still exists within the Public Scholars Project, as was the case with the Horizons Speakers Bureau.

However, the PSP focuses more on interactive, engaging, and audience-specific programming. Also, PSP features a wider range of topics that could be more appealing to a wider range of audiences. The name change reflects this shift.

ARE THERE ANY DOWNLOADABLE PSP PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS AVAILABLE?

Yes. A general PSP postcard and fee-for-service flyer are available on our Resources page.

We are working on developing a template for a flyer for customizable usage for host sites. Remember, the NJCH logo and funding statement should be on all materials affiliated with the PSP subsidy program.

HUMANITIES TO GO are our "grab and go" offerings. Based on your organization and desired topics/formats, we offer programs, often subsidized by our federal and corporate funding, so that you can bring high quality humanities programs to your audiences.

At NJCH, we believe that everyone should have access to humanities programming. That's why we created Humanities to Go. We want the humanities to be able to come to you.
